A new wearable aims to help people achieve their physical goals through neuroscience-based ‘careable tech'.

The recently concluded MWC 2018 unveiled a headset that sends electric pulses to the brain to help you fight the flab. Modius is a headset worn for a few hours a week, which stimulates the part of the brain associated with metabolism and fat storage.

The headset, according to Modius, 'generates a low-level electrical pulse that is interpreted by the brain as a signal to become leaner'. The folks behind Modius point that many people hit a plateau in the early stages of their weight loss journey. Modius helps break through this by activating the hypothalamus.

Wearing the headset isn't meant to be a chore, but to help you find that little bit of calm. That's one of the reasons the Modius team has labeled the headset as the first generation of 'careable technology'.

Traditionally wearable technology has been focused on monitoring you, allowing you to see how many steps you're walking, what your heart rate is or how many calories you're burning, explains Modius. "Careable technology is wearable technology that goes beyond tracking and actually does something," it says.

Given anything that tinkers with the brain will raise eyebrows, the company seems to be making sure the science behind the technology is water-tight. Its case studies attest to Modius having a real-world benefit for its users. They reveal that "after three months of using Modius daily, almost 80 percent of users have lost weight". This does come with the caveat that this data has been 'self-reported' by Modius users.
