Unalome - The Crown Of Arahants

The significance of the word unalome is still mysterious. On web we have several ideas regarding what it should mean or what many people tried to claim it to be. Basically it is one of Buddhist tattoos which is considered to be very spiritual and its meaning and sources are still mysterious and nothing comes from a credible source. These are spiritual symbols related to Theravada Buddhism. It is practised mainly in Sri Lanka, Burma (Myanmar), Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos. Their common significance is that they represent path to enlightenment.

The bottom spiral presents the struggle with life, that struggle which gets thinner as one continues and attains enlightenment or nirvana.

The main motive of this tattoo would be to remind people that life is full of struggles. At some point it would drain you but don’t forget this is a part of your journey. The journey that you have begun from the day of your birth. Be honest with your deeds. Work on being a better version of yours. Because the spirals in the above tattoo represent the struggles and the straight line pointing upwards means the path towards the enlightenment. Lotus above that straight line implies that now you are an enlightened arahant and a perfectionist and life would be much more peaceful and calm. There are no responsibilities. Its only you and your prayers, in which you thank almighty for this beautiful life and for all ups and downs that taught you how to stay humble.

Quite often people get it tattooed on their body. And unalome isn’t confined to just one meaning and symbol. It has varied patterns and each pattern has different meaning. Sometimes it has moon that represents enlightenment in darkness. This symbol represents strength and resilience.
