Indian history is so vast that we tend to get confused between which particular period come first. For example if I ask you what developed first, Indus valley civilization or Vedas? We had so many great rulers, invaders and revolutionary moments, so the probability of us getting confused is more. Sometimes when we are sitting with our friends, discussing our religion or some particular ancient period, we many times argue over the sequence of important things that happened in past. In this blog, I am going to present you a complete timeline right from the start. I’ll also mention the era’s year for each period but don’t worry; you don’t have to focus on numbers. Reading throughout the lines would be enough.

9000 BC – Semi permanent settlement culture, early

Neolithic, rock shelters (found in modern

Madhya Pradesh)

4000 BC - Early Indus valley civilization period, during

These period new technologies such as brick

House and drainage system was developed.

2600 BC - Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa emerged as

Metropolises

1500 BC – Early Vedic period

1200 BC – Rig-Veda was introduced

1000 BC – middle and late Vedic period

700 BC – development of Upanishads, an important text in Hinduism

600 BC – Vedic period ends

599 BC – this period saw birth of Mahavira and Jainism

563 BC – Siddhartha Gautama (the Buddha) was born.

400 BC – Nepal founds Buddhism

327 BC – Alexander arrived in India

321 BC – Mauryan period were found by Chandragupta Maurya

273 BC – The grandson of Chandragupta Maurya, Ashoka the great sat on the throne of Mauryan Empire.

256 BC – Kalinga war between Ashoka and the kingdom of Kalinga took place. This is very significant war as after Ashoka won the war, he regret how much life he have destroyed and hence he adopted Buddhism.

260 BC – Ashoka starts showing religious tolerance. Also he started treating from all class and religion as equals. He also started introducing terms like non-violence and republicanism.

232 BC – Ashoka dies and Kunala Succeeded

184 BC – The Mauryan Empire collapse.

58 BC – The Vikram era begins.

NOTE:

-In Iron Age Vedic period begins and introduction of several Hinduism spiritual text. In addition, it saw the rise of Buddhism and Jainism.
