Ever thought of the importance which “happiness” carries in your life? Most of the people existing in this world right now don’t even know what ‘happiness’ means or what does ‘being happy’ means? We are so lost in our day to day life rush that we often forget to ‘smile’, ‘embrace them’ and spread happiness around us.

According to Gallup Poll, happiness is generally decreasing worldwide. But, in the country of Fiji, the trend is bit opposite as Fijians deals with their stress in a different way. They see happiness as not just a feeling but they have adopted it as their lifestyle. This feeling of contentment is evident in the Fijian culture right from the moment they greet each other or bless them when they sneeze or wish them good health- Fijians always says “Bula”!! and hence people who share this ‘Bula Spirit’ or joyful enthusiasm are called “Bulanaires”. These bulanaires are defined by their relentless prioritization of happiness for themselves and others, their compassion and altruism.

Among the few examples of inspiring bulanaires around the world, one is “Eddie Jaku”. Jaku is the self-proclaimed “happiest man on earth.” As a Jew living in Germany before and during World War II, he saw death every day throughout the war and because of that he made a vow to himself to smile every day.Jaku has one life lesson he wishes to teach those younger than him, which is: “You must not hate.” He says, “Hate is a disease. It destroys first your enemy and then you also. Hate should be taken out of the vocabulary. This is the downfall of humanity.” Jaku truly lives up to his own promise and at 98 years young, still manages to inspire everyone who meets him.

Few practices that you could follow in your daily life in order to make yourself happy and content are:-

  • Write down your issues:- Research shows that writing down your issues on the paper increase happiness and eliminate the stress of unfulfilled goals as it gives you a rough direction to deal with your problems.

  • Nurture relationships with people around you:- It has been rightly said that man is a social animal. So in order to stay happy and positive it is really important to nurture your relationships with the people whom you are close to.

  • Be generous and grateful:- Although it is hard to be grateful in your hard times but you should remember that not anyone has an easy life.
