My final list of anime whose endings deviate from stereotypical anime endings, hope this satisfies the viewers itching for a change.

(Warning! this article may contain spoilers)

Darker Than Black

An anime series created and directed by Tensai Okamura and animated by Bones studio, Darker than Black is a well lauded series known for its action sequences and plot twists.

The story focuses on Hei, an assassin who undertakes missions for the mysterious and ruthless Syndicate while slowly peeling back the dark layers covering a nefarious plot that threatens the very existence of Contractors.

Throughout the plot, the main character doesn't have a moment's peace and his loved ones keep on dying around him. However this doesn't seem to deter him from his goal. However, the plot takes a surprise detour from the predicted ending and he doesn't achieve it, choosing his love over his goal. Even that doesn't work out. There is rumour of a third season with a conclusive ending, however nothing is definite.

Blast Of Tempest

Blast of Tempest is a 24 episode anime series produced by Bones studio. The story revolves around Mahiro Fuwa and his best friend Yoshino Takigawa. Mahiro's step sister and Yoshino's girlfriend, Aika, was found murdered which initiates the story of finding out her killer.

For the ending one would normally expect the main characters to out who killed Aika, but they realise that she committed suicide. When they find out that they cannot bring her back to life, they end up entering relationships in order to mend their heartbreak.

Angle Beats

Angel Beats is a 13-episode anime series produced by P.A.Works studio. The plot revolves around Yuzuru Otonashi, a boy who is suffering from amnesia in the afterlife. Yuzuru tries to comprehend his situation and regain his memories.

Yuzuru and his friends realize that the only way to pass on is to ensure that they have no regrets. One by one, he helps his friends eliminate their regrets and pass on. Yuzuru regains his memories only to realize that he had been an extremely kind-hearted person who was bent on helping people even after his untimely death, by donating his organs, and hence had no regrets. He realizes that the girl he loves was the recipient of his heart, and had only one regret, that she couldn't thank the person who gave her a new lease of life, short-lived as it was. Even though he realizes that he would be left all alone once he clears her regret, he does so. The story ends with him being trapped in the afterlife, forever doomed to help youth with regrets pass on, a dramatic twist which surprised the viewers expecting a happy ending.

With this I end my list of anime which deviate from stereotypical anime endings, hope it helps. If you have any other anime to add to this list, feel free to mention it in the comments below (I haven't added all the anime series with sad endings).
