Why The Differences Complement

When the mortal remains of all the people are the same why do we have so many conflict among people? Colour difference, cast division, language barriers, economic disparities, ideologies and religious beliefs give rise to conflict among people. When some differences can be resolved over a period of time, whatever is connected with religion and religious beliefs affect people deeply and is difficult to resolve.

The goal of religion is:

To lead people to discover the truth about the divine and to have a personal relationship with God.

' Whoever comes to me, through whatever form; I reach him. All men are struggling through paths which in the end lead to me' .

Today we have become a religious intolerant country. Some other countries also can say this same thing about themselves. The solution for headache is not cutting off the head. If we find out the cause of intolerance we may be able to build a country in which truth, goodness and beauty found in different religions are harmoniously integrated. To work for Religious Harmony one has to respect and appreciate people of other faiths. This process can be summarised under three challenges:

(a) The challenge of tolerance: Tolerance is the virtue that makes us understand and accept the right of others to have their own views, opinions and convictions. Tolerance requires the humility to acknowledge that there are other ways of doing things than the way you do it. Religious tolerance is based on a firm belief in one's own religion and in acceptance and appreciation of other religions and their teachings as beneficial to people of all faiths.

(b) The challenge to study one's own Scriptures, traditions and practices as well as those of other religions: Ignorance of other people's religions as well as one's own religion, prejudice, bigotry, bias and preconceived notions have been the cause of violence and riots. Knowledge based on serious study leads to understanding and acceptance.

(c) The challenge to work for peace and harmony: When we live, work and study with people of other faiths, we must also learn what they believe and practise. This is the proof of a truly religious person. People fight over places of worship. Places of worship are important but more vital issues are people in whom God dwells. Working unitedly for a better life, job opportunities, better housing etc is more acceptable to God than building and decorating places of worship. Jesus Christ says that at the Last Judgement we will be judged on how we loved the poor, the homeless and the sick. All religions promote such acts of compassion and charity.

There can be no peace without linguistic, cultural and religious harmony. We are one and we address you as ' One God '. Thank you for his privilege that has opened our hearts to one another and enabled us to feel the oneness in spite of the very many differences which have separated human kind for ages.
