Pm And Post Truth

Post truth was a word that came into prominence after the Trump election. The word means a political culture where leaders speak emotionally rather than factually/ rationally. The listeners even after sensing the absence of facts and reason tend to believe the leader. Remember how the Americans voted for the practically impossible Mexican wall. Now that’s what a post truth is.

We can not push away the phenomenon of post truth as a western political culture. It is curious and shocking to find out the fact that our own PM indulges in the same. There were many instances where he was factually incorrect yet well received, mainly by the andh bhakts.

Following are some instances of post truth in India.

Lord ganesha and Plastic Surgery

In a gathering of doctors in 2014 PM told that Lrd Ganesha validates the existence of plastic surgery in vedic times.The statements itself is awful. But it’s reception by doctors is even more awful.

Nehru and Bhagat Singh

On May 9,2018 at a public rally in Karnataka, Modi rhetorically asked the audience “did anyone from Congress met Bhagat Singh and his associates when they were jailed?” The people present at the rally instantly bought this pseudo- historical fact. Later many historians came with a reality check for PM stating records of Nehru's visit to the jail. But PM never clarified the mistake he made

Rajiv Gandhi issue

In the recent election rallies PM made two accusations against former PM Rajiv Gandhi. Referring to Bofors scanda, he called Gandhi the most corrupt politician of India. The judiciary itself gave clean chit to Rajiv Gandhi in the scandal. So such a statement is illogical and unreasonable.

Again he accused Gandhi of using our official cruise INS Virat as a private cruise for family vacation during official visits to the Indian islands. Former naval chief himself refuted this claim. Yet again PM gave no clarification.

Comparing Kerala to Somalia

Last year in a public gathering in Kerala,PM compared Kerala to Somalia for having the highest unemployment and mortality rates.Contrary to the statement Kerala fares ahead of other states in social indicators.

The most recent to the list is the latest claim by Modi that clouds could shield aircrafts from hostile radars. When the army thought of postponing the attack due to bad weather PM reminded them of “ this scientific principle” and asked the army to carry out the attack as per the actual schedule. Sciences defy this fact. For more than a decade we have had sophisticated radars. Pakistan would also have had them . Simple logic.

Had it been some innocent lies we wouldn’t have bothered about them. But these are lies with a clear agenda. These post truths voted him as well as Trump in America to power. It is a solace that these lies are not as welcome as they were in 2014. The voices of dissent , though a minority, offers much relief.
