Result: India regains possession ofKargil

The kargil war stands out as perhaps the most valuablecontribution to our military literature since independence. It was on july 26 in 1999 that the Indian army recaptured all the posts in kargil that had been occupied by the Pakistan’s army.

Kashmir, the region spilt between india and Pakistan, is an extremely mountainous region containing some of the worlds largest peaks. The LOC ( line of control ) is the recognized border between the two countries and stated that neither the Indians nor the Pakistanis would contest the border through military means. Since then the place was guarded heavily on both the sides, for majority of the year. During the exceedingly cold winter months, when roads and supply routes become impassable and risk of an offensive attack from either side was minimal, both the guards abandoned their posts and returned in the spring. However, during the winter of 1998-1999 the Pakistani gaurds under General Pervez Musharaf crossed the LOC and came into India’s portion of Kashmir. They took over the Indian outposts and dug into their positions in Kargil. This resulted in the kargil war and both the sides suffered significant casualties. The official death toll on the Indian side was 527, while that on the Pakistani side was between 357 and 453.This war is commonly known as operation Vijay in india.

A lot has changed since the war ended 20 years ago. The army says chances of another similar conflict are unlikelyto happen again. The war in Kargil will go down in the history of the india as a saga of unmatched bravery on the battlefield by the Indian Army; a symbol of great pride and inspiration.

ps:- I took help from various essays to write this one.
