While it’s true that most companies currently ask candidates for a college degree in India, the recent trend across the seas is that you have a really high chance of getting hired even though you don’t have a degree from a university. But yes, there’s also a catch. You need to possess the skill required or asked for in the eligibility criteria. To get in, you’ll probably have to go through stringent testing methods to prove that you’re capable enough. Why has this trend started, in the first place?

It so happens that education is expensive in many countries. What costs Rs. 4 lakhs approximately in India (given that you get a “government seat”) for the complete course, will cost you about five times that if you choose to pursue your education in countries like the US. For people in India, it may feel like there’s a comparative reduction in burden if you’re from the US. But if you follow social media very thoroughly, you will come to know that it is not so. The percentage of students who graduated from high-school and enrolled themselves in colleges is just around 70. A similar situation is existing in India as well. And a vast number of the people who finish college, are categorized as unemployable, which means that the time and money that was put into the degree wasn’t worthwhile.

So, companies took a step towards hiring people with the required skill rather than a degree. And mind you, it’s not just small companies who took the step. Tech giants like Google and Apple are among those hiring people with their eligibility criteria not including the words “Bachelor’s degree” in them. Here are a few companies that no longer ask or insist for a degree to be hired.

Google

One of the biggest companies across the globe, google is hiring for various positions including software engineers, mechanical engineers, recruiters, research scientist etc, and with a rating of 4.4, you definitely want to have this on your list if you think you’re worthy

Apple

With a rating of 4.0, this tech titan is hiring for positions like Genius, Design Verification Engineer, Engineering Project Manager, iPhone Buyer, Apple Technical Specialist and so on. You might wanna consider taking a bite out of this one.

Ernst & Young

While most positions at EY require a bachelor’s degree, there are flexible positions available here which do not need that, like Risk Advisors. EY has a rating of 3.7

Other major companies in this list include Hilton, Whole Foods, Costco Wholesale, Penguin Random House, Publix, Nordstrom, Starbucks and so on. While these are global companies following the trend, many of the emerging start-ups across the globe (yes, India included), are joining the line too. So, it’s high time for a person to sharpen their skills. Who knows, you might end up in one of the big shots. Good luck!
