There are some things in life we do not see seriously. We go on blaming and try to give that person serious punishment. In our regular life, we hear many stories like someone has stolen something and even we hear about children doing this. We instantly blame their parents for not looking after their child.

There can be a more serious issue which we underestimate.

Kleptomania is a serious disorder that causes an irrestible urge to steal items that aren't required and are usually of little value. Sometimes an individual with kleptomania will store the items away somewhere often never to be looked at or used. Others may rid themselves of the stolen objects by giving them away to friends and family or even by returning them to the place where were taken from. Kleptomaniacs don't steal money for monetary gain.

How will you understand your loved one is a kleptomaniac?

The age of onset for kleptomaniac is variable. It can begin in childhood, adolescence, or adulthood and in rare cases, late adulthood.

Symptoms

  • A repeated failure to resist powerful urges to steal items that you don't need.

  • Feeling increased tension, anxiety or arousal leading up to the theft.

  • Feeling terrible guilt, remorse, self loathing, shame or fear or gratification after stealing.

  • Feelings of relief or pleasure during the theft.

  • Return of the urges and a repetition of the kleptomania cycle.

Remedy

  • Many people with kleptomania live lives of secret shame because they are afraid to seek mental health treatment but it is very important to seek medical assistance from a psychiatrist or other therapist. They will be able to work with you on everything you are going through which means that you will be able to avoid the compulsion next time, which may be able to keep out of jail or keep you from other negative consequences.

  • Give mental support to that person because they feel a lot of shame and guilt as a result that means they feel isolated from their loved ones.
