Discrimination against women and inequalities have prevailed in India for so long that it had been very challenging task to eradicate it. A ccording to customary practises Indian women and girls are meant to remain inside and handle all the household chores, whereas men are considered to be strong and are supposed to earn money for the family and do all the outdoor jobs.
Changing mentality of people becomes difficult when they themselves do not want to change and progress.
To eradicate such gender based inequalities there are various governmental schemes, article 14 to article 18 of the indian constitution talk about equality. Article 14,15 and 16 are Constitutinal Rights of a citizen irrespective or religion, caste, creed, sex etc.
The various steps govt has taken are mentioned below-
Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Andolan
One Stop Centre Scheme for women sufering from domestic violence
Womens Helpline 1091
Mahila Haath to support women enterpreneurs
Recently Arvind Kejriwal the chief minister of Delhi announced free transport services for women of Delhi .
In my opinion it is not at all a step towards women empowerment, Independent women who earn do not need such financial support, instead those who are financially backwards and people below poverty line should be given such assistance. Free transport services should be gven to evryone who require it, not just women. The step taken by the C.M. of Delhi was required but not for the group he has taken for,not for women but for bpl citizens. This step indicates that women are economically and socially backwards in the society and also need financial assistance, which is not the case. Yes, some women do need such upliftment but there are other people including men who are bpl and they should also be given free transport services.
"Feminism is not about making women strong, women are already strong, it is about the way the world percieves that strength."
