As the new policy of free bus and metro fare for women is introduced by our honourable Chief Minister Mr. Arvind Kejriwal there are a lot of arguments going on on this matter. The first question that arises is, does Delhi really needs this policy? Before jumping to the conclusion let us look at all the perspectives of this policy. So the main objective of the policy is to provide safety to women. Now I have a question to all the ladies out there that will free Metro fare make us feel safer? Being a woman my answer is a big ‘NO’. Logically how can free fare make us feel safer? So therefore in my opinion it is an invalid reason.

Plus extending this safety point further Metro already has a coach reserved for ladies. Now some people who are in support of this policy are giving an argument in favor that it is all about FLUX and that free fare will allow more women travel through Metro’s thus making men comfortable with the fact that women can travel in Metros. But in my opinion maximum number of males in Delhi are very much comfortable with the fact that women do travel through Metros. Thus making this argument also invalid because women do travel through Metro and many of them.

Now some people also have an argument that number of females are less than that of males in Metro. Well I think there are 2 major reasons for this: 1. Maximum number of women who are in their 40s or more don’t work because they belong to that time where women education was not given much importance and working of women outside was also considered as bad. 2. Male to female ratio is also less in India.

So therefore which makes this argument not so adequate.

On side we talk of equality but on the other side we are giving such privilege to all the women including those who don’t need it.

Let us understand this through an example. There are 2 employees in a company one male other female. Both are working on the same level, put in same amount of hard work, earning same amount of salaries but the female employee is getting privilege of free fare just because she is a ‘WOMAN’. Now for me that is ‘GENDER DISCRIMINATION’ AND INJUSTICE to the men of our society.

Being the youth of this country we must understand that who needs this particular policy a woman who is earning ₹1,00,000 p.m. or a man who is earning barely ₹10,000 p.m. Who needs this policy more?

I am not regarding this policy as useless because it reflects that our country is doing well and is very much capable of bearing this fare expense through the budget. But the problem is that this benefit would also be used by those who don’t need this. The benefits of this amazing policy must be given to economically weaker sections of our country which ultimately includes both women and men (who need this).

There is absolutely no issue with this policy, the only problem here is that benefit would be taken by those people who don’t require this at all.

Summing up this, I would like to share that for now in my opinion the objective of this policy is unsubstantial and let us wait and watch for some time to see where and how this policy goes.
